Why We Can’t Earn God’s Love
February 5th, 2020 | 53 mins 28 secs
apologetics, catholic, catholic church, catholic ministry, dave vanvickle, earning god's love, evangelization, evangelize, faith, god's love, gomer, grace, justification, justified, justified by christ, mike gormley, ministry, parish, works
Dave “The Meateater” VanVickle and I talk about the trap of thinking we need to earn God’s love. This idea is what leads us to that “holier-than-thou” attitude where we congratulate ourselves for not sinning, and then look down on those who are struggling with sin. The reality is that God is a loving father who will give us what we need to serve and love him (aka grace). It’s not through our own efforts that we earn God’s love, it is a free gift that we can respond to … or not.
Natural Happiness: A Philosophical Approach to Evangelization
November 13th, 2019 | 43 mins 5 secs
apologetics, aquinas, catholic, catholic church, catholic ministry, catholic philosophy, dave vanvickle, evangelization, evangelize, gomer, happiness, kerygma, michael gormley, mike gormley, ministry, natural happiness, parish, philosophy, theology
Dave “The Dandy” VanVickle and I are talking about a different approach to evangelization: philosophy. A lot of people respond to the kerygma alone, but some really need a rational argument to understand the reason for belief in God. So today we dig into natural happiness. To be brief, the idea is that nothing in the world can completely satisfy us, because we were made for something eternal, which is God. We also talk a bit about parish bureaucracy and the hierarchy of the Church. Let’s just say you should pray for your parish.
Maturing in Your Faith
July 31st, 2019 | 39 mins 35 secs
apologetics, catechism, catechism of the catholic church, catholic, catholic church, catholic teachers, dave vanvickle, dogma, evangelize, faith, gomer, kerygma, mike gormley, ministry, saints, teaching the faith, usccb
So you’ve got the kerygma down … now what? Dave “I’m Kind of a Big Deal” VanVickle and I talk about how to mature in your faith after an initial proclamation of the gospel. The kerygma is not the end of evangelization, it’s just the beginning. It’s how someone takes the first step to becoming a disciple of Jesus, but we can’t stop there, we have to make sure that we’re preaching, but also teaching.

Dave “Too Hot to Handle, Too Cold to Hold” VanVickle and I talk about why it’s vital to regularly read Scripture and how to immerse yourself in the Word. We want to hear from you! How Do You Evangelize an Atheist?
June 5th, 2019 | 36 mins 58 secs
apologetics, atheist, catholic, catholic teachers, catholicism, dave vanvickle, evangelize, evangelizing atheists, mike gormley, ministry, proving god's existence, religion teachers, teaching catholicism
It’s hard to start proclaiming the kerygma, “God loves you and has a plan for your life”, when someone doesn’t believe in God. Dave “All Thriller No Filler” VanVickle and I wade into the world of apologetics as we address a listener's question about how to evangelize an atheist. Our faith is rational. Don’t fear questions about what we believe, because at some point over the past two thousand years, that question has already been asked and answered. We just have to find it.

Calling all DREs, catechists, youth ministers, and parish volunteers! Have we got a show for you. (Yes, that was a VeggieTales reference.) We start off today answering some tough questions about the kerygma, and then pivot to ways you can infuse evangelization into programs your parish already has like baptism prep, marriage prep, and religious education. Our advice isn’t the only way to do it, but it is a (pretty darn good) way to do it. How do you evangelize at your parish? We want to hear from you! Email us at [email protected] with your story, question, or comment—or if you’ve got a new nickname for Dave.
Evangelization FAQ’s: Plan B, Skipping Mass, and Non-Catholic Family Weddings

apologetics, catholic, conversion, evangelist, excuses for skipping mass, mary, mass, morning after pill, noncatholic wedding, plan b, sacraments, skipping church, skipping mass, wedding, weddings
You’ve got frequently asked questions, we’ve got infrequently given answers. We tackle questions about what to do when you encounter someone purchasing the Plan B pill, what to do when people (especially family members) give dumb reasons for why they don’t go to church, the role of Mary in evangelization, and talking to family members about having a sacramental wedding when they’re angry with the Church and you’re long distance. (Whew.)
